Travel ideas for 2022
Although its another year in which travel will be subject to restrictions, there's no harm in making, or dreaming about, vacation plans. Here's where the DW travel editorial team would like go.
Summer, sun and sand
Jens Fritze, Social Media: The semi-permanent gray sky over Berlin has been getting me down lately, so I'd like to go somewhere where the sun shines and where I can enjoy the sea, sand and palm trees — however cliche it might be. Maybe a trip to the Maldives? Or chilling on an island in the Indian Ocean? So boss, I guess I'll be working remotely in the near future!
Escaping the winter in Cambodia
Ben Restle, Author: In addition to tropical temperatures, mysterious temples and delicious Khmer cuisine, Cambodia also boasts a corona vaccination rate of over 80% (as of 7.1.2022), making it an ideal destination to escape the Berlin winter in January. I'm particularly looking forward to the species-rich Cardamon rainforest and Cambodia's islands.
Up on Nepal's snowy peaks
Claudia Würzburg, Social Media: In 2022 I would like to travel to Nepal. My plan: trekking in Langtang. This remote Himalayan valley on the border with Tibet, about a seven-hour bus ride from Kathmandu, is surrounded by the snow-capped seven-thousand-meter peaks of the Langtang massif. I'm really looking forward to standing eye to eye with the mountain giants again.
Go on safari in Namibia
Elisabeth Yorck, Editor: I've always dreamt of going on a safari. In fact, I had booked a safari trip in Namibia in 2020, but it was postponed to 2021 when the pandemic struck. However, that didn't work out either. Now it's finally supposed to happen in March 2022. The safari includes stops at Etosha National Park with its many animals, a crocodile farm and the Namib Desert.
Snorkeling in Tulum, Mexico
Sarah Hucal, Author: I’m going to Miami for a friend’s wedding in March and would like travel to Mexico for a few days beforehand. I’m most interested in checking out one of the eco-resorts in Tulum, which is famed for its stunning beaches, archaeological ruins and one of my favorite activities aside from lazing on the beach — snorkeling!
A road trip to Albania
Sophie Dissemond, Author: I would like to use the winter to make my car fit for camping and then drive to Albania in the spring via several stopovers. The small Balkan country fascinates me due to its diversity of landscapes, cuisine and culture. I am especially looking forward to unspoiled nature and extensive mountain tours through national parks.
A trip to the end of the world in Puglia
Andreas Kirchhoff, Editor: I plan to go to Italy and do a bike tour along the coast of Puglia, which I'd originally planned to do in 2020. I'd like to go to the "end of the world" — that's what the place at the southernmost tip of Italy's "boot" was called in ancient times. I'll visit the Basilica Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, one of Italy's most imposing lighthouses, and take a dip in the sea.
La belle vie in France
Susan Bonney-Cox, Editor: Living in the middle of Europe has the advantage that you can just drive off somewhere — there is so much to see in a small area here. My favorite destination is rural France. In summer, I want to sample my way through the delectable food on offer at the many village markets, enjoy the sun surrounded by the scent of herbs and lavender, and gaze at the bright blue sky.
Culture and nature in Upper Bavaria, Germany
Christian Hoffmann, Editorial Director: Oberammergau's famous Passion Play has had to prolong the gap between performances to twelve years, rather than ten. COVID permitting, the performances will start in mid-May and run until the beginning of October. I have tickets for July and want to combine the trip with an extensive hike through the Ammergau Alps: from mountain hut to mountain hut.
Meersburg more likely than the seaside
Marco Müller, Author: Before the pandemic I'd booked a dream vacation to Tenerife, with a big pool right by the sea and a water park nearby. Unfortunately, it was cancelled. As the COVID situation remains unclear, Meersburg on Lake Constance is now the stay-cation plan for this year. There should be sun (hopefully), sand (a little), a pool — instead of the seaside, Meersburg will have to do.
Why go far away when it's nice at home
Martin Koch, Author: I don't really want to go abroad just yet, so I'm planning to go to one of Germany's sunniest regions in 2022: Fehmarn. It's Germany's third-largest island, connected to the mainland by the landmark Fehmarnsund Bridge. What appeals to me is its diversity: dreamy white sandy beaches, spectacular cliffs, tranquil and beautiful villages and, above all, heavenly peace and quiet!
