Sonja Mühlberger from Berlin visits Shanghai, the city where she was born, to rediscover her childhood.

We accompany Sonja Mühlberger from Berlin to Shanghai, where she was born. She grew up in its Jewish ghetto with her parents, who struggled to come to terms with their life in a foreign city occupied by the Japanese army. The Mühlbergers were among the few Jewish families who returned to Germany after the war..

The Swarthout family from Montana moved to Berlin for two years, eager to get to know the country of their ancestors and to explore their German-Jewish identity.

We also meet the Swarthout family from Montana in the US. Brian and Donna both have German roots - her parents were German Jews who met in New York, while Brian’s mother, like Sonja Mühlberger, was born in China and later moved to California. The Swarthouts’ journey into the past took them and their three children to Berlin, where they spent two years exploring their German Jewish identity and what it means today.

Three generations, three continents: The Hamburger family gathering in Brazil.

We also head to São Paulo in Brazil to meet the extended Hamburger family. Born in Berlin, Ernst Wolfgang Hamburger came here when he was 3 years old. For the first time he has brought together 50 members of his family from three different continents. Over the years the family has added many other cultural and religious influences to its original German-Jewish roots.
