The coverage of Human Rights Council: Bringing journalists from violating countries

Monday, 20 June 2011, 2.00 p.m., Room Carstens

Every year, 48 countries are publicly examined by the Universal Periodic Review of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Since 2006, Media21 and IMGG have invited 100 journalists from states with controversial HR records to meet diplomats, experts and NGOs during the sessions – including China, Russia, Israel, Lebanon, Haiti, Liberia, Burma, Rwanda, Serbia, Nicaragua, USA, Sudan and Somalia. This unique experience shows how the combined training and coverage of this process can impact not only public opinion of the examined countries, but also the media professionals and the delegation of a country under review, which can no longer hide or downplay embarrassing facts.
