Future Forward has been dissolved after it was found to have breached electoral rules to do with funding. Critics say the charges are politically motivated against a party that fought against the Thai Army’s influence in politics.
The banning of Thai opposition party Future Forward illustrates the country's lack of separation of powers. It is time to acknowledge Thailand's military government is an authoritarian junta, says Rodion Ebbighausen.
The leaders of the anti-military Future Forward party have been banned from participating in politics for 10 years after the Consitutional Court dissolved the party over a $6 million loan from the founder.
Thousands have joined the "Run Against Dictatorship" in the Thai capital, with some protesters showing the three-finger salute made popular by the dystopian trilogy "The Hunger Games."
The court ruling means the major Thai opposition Future Forward Party will not be banned on sedition charges. However, the party still faces several more legal challenges that could yet see it dissolved.
