Frenetic breakdance meets classical dance – and toe-tapping rhythms are blended with the sound of a large orchestra. In the new production Swan Lake Reloaded Tchaikovsky meets Streetdance, Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman has turned Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece into a modern street dance spectacle set in a red light district. Instead of taboos, sorcery and supernatural powers, the new production is cast in an urban setting in the modern era. The central theme is the insatiable greed for drugs and love. Swan Lake is the most performed ballet in the world. But Rydman is the first to turn the enchanted swans into drug-addicted sex workers. The choreographer has translated the classic material into a modern fairytale. Tchaikovsky’s music also gets a makeover, with the addition of hip-hop beats, electronic remixes and sampling.
