Carl Spitzweg helped to define the image of the German Biedermeier era. His best-known paintings include "The Poor Poet," "The Cactus Friend" and "The Bookworm." But there's more to these idyllic little worlds than first meets the eye. Spitzweg's works are also intended to provoke. Now a new book provides insights into previously unexplored aspects of the painter's life.
