Haakon Spriewald is a student of political science and cultural studies at the University of Bremen with a special focus on human rights and Turkey. He moved to Istanbul in 2011 to enhance his studies with experiences out of the classroom and to gather firsthand information about the declining status of human rights under the rule of Tayyip Erdoğan’s AKP. Focusing especially on the education system in Turkey, he is in close contact with professors and students from several universities as well as with the Helsinki Citizen Assembly Istanbul (HCA). He was involved in emergency relief provided by the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) and HCA in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake in Van, Turkey.
