The economic crisis is requiring people in Spain to become ever more flexible. To make ends meet, some Spaniards are turning to age-old trade like polishing shoes.

Javier Castaño Fernández was a graphic designer before being made redundant after he was replaced by an unpaid intern. Nonetheless, he refused to give up, even if the alternative was shining shoes. Castaño is no ordinary bootblack. He's a 21st century entrepreneur with a self-designed stand, a website and appointment calendar on his Blackberry.
