There's still a shortage of highly-skilled workers in Germany although the situation has improved recently.
Hundreds of thousands of new jobs in Germany are being done by workers from Eastern Europe, according to government figures. Employment figures in July were 700,000 higher than in the previous year.
A shortage of qualified workers is good incentive for change. Germany's coalition government has reached a deal on several key immigration issues, including making it easier for non-EU citizens to work in the country.
The highest labor court in Germany based the case on an ECJ ruling that religious affiliation can not be a prerequisite for employment. A woman in Berlin had taken her case to court.
The coalition government has hammered out new laws that prioritize education, age, and financial security. The laws are based on the Canadian model.
