Two of the most contentious Roman Catholic figures of the 20th century have been made saints. Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero and Pope Paul VI were among six religious figures canonized in a Vatican ceremony.
The two bishops are the latest heads to roll over a child abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church in Chile. The public firings are signs of a new transparency by the Vatican after years of cover-up claims.
Father Fernando Karadima, who was at the center of a child sexual abuse scandal during the 1980s and 1990s, has been stripped of his duties by the pope. Karadima had been found guilty in 2011 of abusing teenage boys.
