Editor in Chief, Deutsche Welle
Ute Schaeffer is the editor-in-chief of Deutsche Welle, Germany's foreign broadcaster. Until 2011 she headed the station's Africa/Middle East program. As a journalist she focuses on European and German policy towards Africa and on German international development cooperation. She also reports on political, economic, social and cultural developments in Africa.
Schaeffer has spent several long periods abroad, reporting for DW from more than 20 states in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf States and Eastern Europe. She also writes regularly on media issues and journalism. She studied history, art history, comparative literature and Romance studies.
