PSG's Serge Aurier sentenced to two months in jail

September 26, 2016

Paris St Germain's Serge Aurier has been sentenced to two months in jail for assaulting a police officer outside a Paris nightclub. The fullback's sentence is "convertible", meaning he is unlikely to actually go to jail.

The decision was announced after the Ivorian international appeared in court to deny the assault charge. The court heard that Aurier, who has had a string of disciplinary issues since joined the Parisian club in 2014, refused to cooperate when asked to leave his tinted-glass Porsche Cayenne car, which police said was incorrectly parked outside the club in the early hours of an evening in May this year.

Police said the altercation became violent when Aurier elbowed an officer in the chest, causing him to take a day off work.

After the hearing, Aurier confirmed that he will appeal the charge and was allowed to walk free from the court because no order for immediate incarceration was issued. He is likely to do community service rather than jailtime. It means he could play for PSG in their Champions League match against Ludogorets in Bulgaria on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old rejected the police account of the incident and filed a complaint against them.

The court ordered him to pay 600 euros (674 US dollars) in damages and interest as well as 1500 euros (1685 US dollars).
