Protest turned violent in Skopje after President Gjorge Ivanov blocked legal proccedings agianst top politicians. The demonstrators have demanded the resignation of the president.
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has accused Moscow of spreading disinformation in Macedonia ahead of the referendum on changing the country's name. The change could lead to Macedonia joining NATO and the EU.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has visited Skopje to add her voice to calls that the Balkans nation rename itself as "North Macedonia." The dispute has long hobbled ties with Greece and integration into the West.
After Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev agreed to rename his country Northern Macedonia, President Gjorge Ivanov declared he would not sign off on the deal with Greece. The Greek government faces troubles of its own.
Greece and Macedonia have reached an agreement in their long-running dispute over the name of the former Yugoslav republic. Senior officials from both the EU and NATO have welcomed the agreement.
