As Brazil took on their fierce rivals Uruguay in a confederations cup soccer match in Belo Horizonte, there were protests around the Estadio Mineirao. Demonstrators clashed with police, who were attempting to stop them from marching on the stadium.
Egypt and Liverpool soccer star Mohamed Salah has picked up the Confederation of African Football's top player award for a second successive year. The Bundesliga's Achraf Hakimi was honored in the youth player category.
Egypt has pipped South Africa to the hosting rights for this year's Africa Cup of Nations. Cameroon had been stripped of the tournament last year after planning and security concerns.
France will hand over an alleged African militia leader, Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona, to the ICC, where he faces war crimes charges. Ngaissona is a member of Africa's top footballing body, the CAF.
Cameroon has lost the right to host next year's African Cup of Nations as a result of delays and concerns over violence near two of the planned venues. It is not yet clear where the tournament will now take place.
