This panel discussion will focus on democracy and human rights in the BMENA region with an emphasis on the recent events that have been taking place throughout the Arab world. The speakers will discuss the role of the media in the revolution, particularly the use of social media and journalistic coverage in linking activists and previously marginalized groups, as well as in creating public awareness. After looking at the existing challenges for democracy and human rights in the region, a special focus will be put on the opportunities arising from the current situation. The group will also consider how the media can be used effectively in the democratic transformation processes in the future, especially beyond garnering initial international attention. The work of the Foundation of the Future will be highlighted in the exploration of how organizations can best aid these processes at this particular time. The foundation was established in 2005 by the BMENA Initiative of the G8, with the aim of strengthening human rights and democracy within the region. Finally, the panelists will discuss their expectations and the perspectives for the region, especially in terms of good governance, increased inclusion and participation of civil society, gender equality, independent media, and improved transparency and accountability.
