This year's long hard winter in Poland has cost well over 200 lives. Most of the victims were either homeless or drunk and froze to death on the streets.

Warsaw alone is said to have over 3000 homeless people. The police search them out, handing out clothing and food and telling them where they can find emergency shelter. But some are reluctant to go to the shelters because they have a strict ban on alcohol. Winter came to Poland early this year, with the first snow falling at the end of November. At times, nighttime temperatures dropped as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.
