Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party in Turkey has called for a ceasefire in his organization's 30-year war for an independent Kurdish homeland.
Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas is running in the Turkish presidential election — from prison. He may have a huge following in the country, but he has received little coverage in Turkey's mainstream press.
Turkey's military has said its warplanes hit 12 Kurdish rebel targets in cross-border raids in northern Iraq. It comes as the Turkey's defense minister said it would not stop until all rebel groups were removed.
The Turkish government accuses left-wing politician Andrej Hunko of supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party. The group has been labeled a terrorist organization by the EU and the US.
Turkish forces will target Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria and possibly Iraq, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said. The threat comes as military and rebel allies captured the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin.
