Pirates – Ocean Highway Robbers

This three-part documentary series deals with the buccaneers of the 21st century. What are their motives? What lies in store for the captive ships‘ crews when they attack? Are military operations the best way to combat modern piracy?
The pirates of today don’t go after treasure-laden galleons – they target gigantic freighters or even oil tankers. In place of the saber and grappling hook, their weapons are automatic rifles and rocket launchers. What are the driving forces behind the pirate raids off the Somali coast or in the Southeast Asian Malacca Strait?
This three-part documentary looks into this question. The reporters speak to former pirates and ordinary people in war-torn, impoverished Somalia, where rival clans often use the ransom money to buy arms and ammunition.
On board a German navy frigate, we experience the fight against piracy from the perspective of a German sailor and find out how difficult and frustrating it can be.
And we meet crew members and skippers who have survived pirate raids, among them the former captain of the German container ship “Hansa Stavanger“ Krzysztof Kotiuk. In the spring of 2009, pirates off Somalia hijacked the vessel and held its crew members captive for four months. The well-seasoned captain is still recovering from the trauma of this experience.
