Mudslide rolls through Montecito, California
A major downpour hit the region in southern California that had been scorched by wildfires, causing a massive mudslide in the region. Several bodies have been found as rescue workers look for survivors.
Downhill disaster
A river of mud roars down Randall Road in Montecito, a town northwest of Los Angeles, where several people were killed by a mudslide on Tuesday. The region, which had been devastated by wildfires in December, was hit by a torrential downpour, which caused the mudslide to occur.
Covered in mud
Firefighters successfully rescued a 14-year-old girl (right) after she was trapped in her collapsed home in Montecito. Dozens of people have been rescued, according to local authorities, but many more are still stranded after the mudslide and flash floods.
Fork in the road
A boulder sits in the middle of Bella Vista Drive in Montecito. Many roads in the area were blocked with boulders such as these as rocks slid with the mud into the streets.
Air support
A man gets rescued from the US 101 freeway in Montecito. With some roads blocked and others covered by a river of mud, rescue crews had to use helicopters to pluck people from their homes and cars.
Dog rescue
Reilly, a Santa Barbara County fire search dog, looks for victims in damaged and destroyed homes. The flash floods and mudslides were so intense because a series of wildfires last month burned off protective vegetation.
