They're citizens of the Republic of Moldova in Southeast Europe and surrounded by a pro-Russian militias. The residents of Cocieri, which lies in an enclave in Russian-controlled Transnistria, are afraid of being annexed by Russia.
Less than 200 kilometers separate Transnistria from the European Union's eastern frontier, on the Romanian border. Yet the tiny sliver of disputed territory might as well be on another planet.
