Police have rescued a hostage taken in a pharmacy at Cologne's central station. The perpetrator is in intensive care after being shot during the operation. Officials said they could not rule out terrorism as a motive.
German authorities have confirmed media reports that a major attack by so-called Islamic State was prevented in 2016. The reports say three teams of jihadists were planning to travel to Germany and kill large numbers of people at a music festival.
Thousands of workers' personal data were reportedly compromised. A US government report earlier in the week criticized the defense department for lackluster progress in securing major weapons systems from cyberattacks.
