Lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Red Mesa de Mujeres de Ciudad Juárez, Mexiko
Imelda Marrufo Nava is a lawyer and human rights activist. She was born in Ciudad Juárez, where she still lives. She is part of the women’s movement that has brought attention to the violence, disappearances and murder of women. She is coordinator of a network of 10 grassroots organizations called Red Mesa de Mujeres de Ciudad Juárez. This network was founded in 2001, when eight bodies of tortured and murdered women were found. Nava works with mothers and families of the disappeared women. She takes part in watch groups, local, provincial and national networks about women’s rights, defense, violence and “femicides”.
