Malawian President Banda reshuffles cabinet

Just over half a year after Malawian President Joyce Banda took the helm as Africa's second female leader, she has reasserted control over her government.

Joyce Banda has reshuffled her cabinet just eight months after she became president of Malawi.

She became president of Malawi following the death of her predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika, under whom she held the controversial position of vice president.

President Banda began the reshuffling of her cabinet at the vice president's office. The Vice President Khumbo Kachali was stripped off his other responsibilities including the running of the ministry of health.

She has replaced Finance Minister Atupele Muluzi with former Minister of Economic planning and Development Dr. Goodall Gondwe.

President Banda also replaced the Attorney General and Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara with former solicitor General Anthony Kamanga.

Among the new ministers she nominated was Ibrahim Matola, who takes over the energy portfolio.
