A warning strike by ground staff with Germany's Lufthansa forced the airline to scrap more than 1,600 flights on Monday. The workers are demanding pay rises and job security in ongoing wage negotiations.
Passengers affected won’t be surprised, but the announcement by Lufthansa that the airline group was forced to cancel 18,000 flights up to the end of August shows the headwinds the aviation industry has faced this year.
Some 30,000 European passengers will be impacted by Ryanair pilot and cabin crew strikes on Friday. The German pilots' union said it will participate in the walkout with 1,000 German cabin crew members set to join them.
Irish no-frills carrier Ryanair has reported a decline in profits for the first half of its fiscal year. Europe's largest budget airline said the slump was due to repeated strikes and higher fuel prices.
Ryanair pilots and cabin staff in Germany have been promised a works council inside the Irish airline by Labor Minister Hubertus Heil. The budget carrier claims to have reached a deal with Portuguese pilots.
