Fighting rages over the Libyan capital Tripoli as powerful militia leader Khalifa Haftar attempts to overthrow the UN backed government. With rockets raining down on the city, thousands have been forced to flee their homes.
Libya's UN-backed government has blamed forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar for cutting off Tripoli's major water pipeline. A UN spokesperson said some Tripoli residents were already experiencing low water pressure.
Italy has been trying to mediate in a conflict between Libya's UN-backed government and forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar. The conflict has revealed bitter divisions between Italy and one of its EU neighbors.
The European Union has formally recognized the government in Tripoli. However, French officials seem to be playing both sides. Many Libyans want France's government to butt out — and General Haftar continues to advance.
The Libyan National Army has launched airstrikes on Tripoli in a bid to seize the capital. The rebel army, headed by strongman Khalifa Haftar, has been galvanized by victories in the country's eastern and southern parts.
