Tension came to a head in Brussels as EU leaders met to discuss pressing issues facing the bloc — Brexit being foremost among them. A discussion between Theresa May and Jean-Claude Juncker showed how high the stakes are.
Time is running out for London and Brussels to agree on the terms of Britain's exit from the EU and their post-Brexit relationship. The EU said they "made progress" toward that goal at a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
Under pressure from Brussels, Rome revised its planned spending spree to cut deficit projections. At the same time, Italian officials were riled over the EU's alleged preferential treatment of France.
With EU polls drawing closer, Germany's SPD has strongly backed Justice Minister Katarina Barley as its top candidate for the European Parliament. Barley is a dual British-German national with a French law degree.
