The German tenor Jonas Kaufmann is one of the most sought-after artists in the opera world. He captivates audiences with the power, emotion and beauty in his singing, the intelligence of his acting, and his extraordinary range - from heroic stage roles in Wagner, to Schubert’s intimate Lieder compositions.
For this documentary, filmmaker John Bridcut was granted unique and often surprising access to Jonas Kaufmann over the course of two years. He observed the star singer in rehearsals, backstage during performances, and in private. It is by far the most intimate and extensive portrait of Jonas Kaufmann, now at the peak of his career, yet made. He followed Jonas Kaufmann behind the scenes at the Last Night of the Proms, when he became the first German to perform "Rule, Britannia!” there. After a vocal injury that interrupted his career for several months, the star tenor made a triumphant return - most notably in a production of Verdi's "Otello” at Covent Garden.
