November 10, 2012

Israeli soldiers have killed three Palestinians and wounded 20 in retaliation for a rocket that hit a military jeep. In recent weeks, the Gaza border area has been the scene of heavy violence and counterattacks.

Witnesses said militants fired a rocket at an Israeli military jeep that exploded on the edge of the border, east of Gaza City, prompting soldiers to respond with artillery fire. Civilians were thought to have been among those hit.

The toll is one of the highest for a single incident in Gaza in recent months. Ambulances and private vehicles took the wounded to hospitals, witnesses said.

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded, two of them seriously. The army gave no immediate comment on the violence.

With tension growing in the border region, five Palestinians were also wounded in Israeli shelling near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, medics said.
