'Islamic State' militants attack prison in Syria

The so-called "Islamic State" has launched the largest-scale attack in Syria since its defeat in 2019. The militant's target: a Kurdish-run jail holding jihadists in the country's northeast.

Although a human rights monitor reported that some inmates fled following the IS attack, Kurdish-led forces that run the jail said the escape attempt in northeast Syria was thwarted.

The ongoing standoff at a Syrian prison shows that the so-called "Islamic State" still has the means to fight. However, experts say that IS doesn't pose a global threat due to lack of money, fighters and ammunition.
