Crossing the Alps on foot remains a huge challenge. An Austrian mountain guide has come up with a very special tour.
A man has fallen to his death while hiking in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. Police discovered his body after another walker found an abandoned pair of trekking poles on a ridge and raised the alarm.
A father and his daughter were killed when an avalanche swept them away while they were skiing in the French Alps. Two other skiers have been rescued in the Swiss Alps near the French boarder after a different avalanche.
Several ski tourers died and others were in critical condition after spending a night on an exposed Swiss mountainside at 3,000 meters altitude. German, French and Italian nationals were among the group.
Romania is developing its range of offers for tourists. Organizers are increasingly relying on tourism that's close to nature, such as guided hikes in the Carpathian Mountains - with encounters with brown bears.
