Last year Philippe Barbarin was convicted for failing to report alleged sex abuse by a priest in his diocese. However, the archbishop of Lyon has now been acquitted at appeal.
On Sunday, Benedict, who retired in 2013, published comments in which he reaffirmed the importance of priest celibacy rules, seen as critical of Pope Francis. Now, he has distanced himself somewhat from the comments.
Amid an atmosphere of global conflict, the pope has called for peace in his annual Christmas message. The church itself has been plagued by recent scandals and opposition.
