In the end, standings leader and reigning champ Lewis Hamilton didn't even need his final lap at the Hunagororing circuit northeast of Budapest. But he aired out his engine nonetheless, bettering his previous best effort and clocking a time of just over 1 minute, 22 seconds.
The Briton was .575 of a second faster than Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who is also his closest rival for the drivers' championship.
It was Hamilton's ninth pole position in ten Formula 1 events this season. It was also his fifth career pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Not coincidentally, he's vying for his fifth win in Hungary, so he'll have every reason for confidence ahead of Sunday's race.
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel will start in third, followed by last year's winner, Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen and Williams' Valtteri Bottas.
