ARD's Middle East correspondent was wounded after he was caught in a shootout in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, SWR, a regional broadcaster for ARD reported Saturday.

Armbruster underwent emergency surgery in Syria after the incident late on Friday and was then taken by ambulance to the Turkish border, where he was treated by a rescue team. He is expected to be flown to Germany where he will receive further treatment once his condition improves.

The veteran reporter had been covering the Free Syrian Army rebels fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Armbruster had been based in Cairo until January 2013, where he had reported on events in the Arab World, including the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the civil war in Libya.

The United Nations estimates that at least 70,000 people have been killled since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011.
