Regulations instead of tariffs: German carmakers welcome the agreements between Mexico and the US. More components have to come from the US. But German manufacturers are dependent on open borders.
The US has dropped steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico. The tariffs had stood for just under a year and were part of a bitter trade dispute between the North American trading partners.
US President Donald Trump has announced a breakthrough in talks on a new trade pact with Mexico, saying he hoped the "really good deal" would be joined by third NAFTA member Canada, which didn't take part in the talks.
With the clock ticking, the US and Canada have reached a new trilateral trade deal with Mexico. Called USMCA, the pact will create a revamped NAFTA with key sections focusing on auto imports and Canada's dairy market.
During ongoing discussions about reworking the NAFTA free trade pact, Robert Lighthizer has said that he expects a breakthrough in the coming days, though his Mexican counterpart has urged more flexibility for a deal.
