The world's largest video games event is due to get underway in the German city of Cologne. Exhibitors from more than 50 countries are presenting their wares at this year's Gamescom, where the focus is on getting social.
Gamers are voters, too. At least the ones over 18. Now shortly before a general election, top policymakers in Germany have discovered the digital gaming community and are sitting up and taking notice.
The early gamers are now grown up - and they're expecting challenging stories from their games. From "Life Is Strange" and "Vampyr" to Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth," new releases boast innovative storytelling.
The overall-wearing Italian plumber has swept the prizes at the video game trade fair in Cologne. The new Super Mario installation will be released in October - some 36 years after Mario first debuted as "Jumpman."
Cooperative play is the buzz phrase at Gamescom 2017. But in spite of the excitement around eSports and unprecedented attention from politics, the theme "just play together" might only apply to consumers, not creators.
