France: Escape across the English Channel

Thousands of refugees have gathered in Calais, France, with the aim of crossing the English Channel. Many others have already made it to the UK.

About 7,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year. Funded by the UK, French police units try to stop refugees embarking on the journey.

These topics are also in "Global 3000":

Russia: A passion for reforestation

Marianna Muntianu has devised all kinds of ways to encourage people to plant trees. She oversees 6,000 volunteers doing just that under the auspices of her 'Plant the Forest' project. The United Nations has named her a Young Champion of the Earth.

Albania: Mountains and migration

It’s hard to make a living as a shepherd or farmer in the mountains of northeastern Albania. An NGO is devoted to environmental protection and helping families find sustainable livelihoods there. Many young people go abroad.

Japan: Rejuvenating old villages

Nanmoku has the oldest population of any village in Japan. Two thirds of its residents are over 65. A government program is helping young people move to Nanmoku, find work and feel at home there. That’s helping bring new life to the village.
