Residents of parts of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia-backed separatists have voted in polls condemned by Germany. A rebel official accused Ukraine of using "telephone terrorism" to try to tamper with the vote.
Voters in east Ukraine have confirmed in office interim leaders of two rebel-held regions. The polls, denounced by Kyiv and the West, are widely seen as tightening Moscow's grip on the territories.
The battle to be the next leader of Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats is heating up. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the candidate considered closest to the chancellor personally and politically, has now made her case.
Sources close to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer have told a respected German newspaper that he plans to resign. Seehofer's spokesperson has denied the reports.
