The medieval medina in Fez, Morocco, is the largest in North Africa. In 1981, it was named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
A series of 100 euro gold coins has been issued since 2003 to honour the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites. For 2019, the Federal Government has chosen the Speyer Cathedral as its motif.
On December 25, 1643 Dutch seafarers sighted an island in the Indian Ocean. Its discovery at Christmas determined its name. And later another Christmas island was discovered in the Pacific Ocean.

Hardly anywhere else on Earth is as good for whale watching as the Canary Islands in the Atlantic. DW reporter Christina Deicke went on board to get a glimpse of these marine giants in their natural habitat.
