FaMILy Quiz: Bridging the generational MIL gap

How can families better understand each other’s use of the media? To bridge this gap, DW Akademie's partners in Moldova and Ukraine have created a MIL family quiz to spark conversations about the media within families.

One of the few offline international events organized in the beginning of 2020 was the Youth Meets Media Forum. It took place in Chisinau, Moldova and brought together young media workers from different countries. Part of the three-day event was an IdeaLab where the Moldovan NGO Diversitate and Ukrainian NGO Insha Osvita developed and presented the concept of the FaMILy Quiz. While parents watch TV and read the news on their smartphones, kids follow their friends on Instagram and TikTok and create content to entertain others. The aim of the quiz is to help families better understand how different generations use media.

Bringing MIL into people’s homes

The COVID-19 pandemic meant the team had to revise the idea. “Initially it was planned as a pub quiz on media literacy so that youth could involve their parents and spend quality time together,”, said Revaz Tateishvili, a trainer and project manager at Insha Osvita.

They’ve now created a virtual version of the FaMILy Quiz which introduces the players to various topics in the field of media and information literacy — in their homes. Each family plays online as a registered team and is represented by a team captain. Together families answer questions from the moderator about media use, disinformation, social networks and content creation. The fastest team gets the most points. The new version of the FaMILy Quiz also features creative tasks for more interaction and fun. It will be streamed on the live streaming platform Twitch.

Bridging the knowledge gap

This online quiz is meant to playfully start a conversation between young people and their parents about their use of different media. It offers an opportunity to learn from each other and reflect on different media habits, knowledge and experiences. Ecaterina Postolati, a trainer at Diversitate, is optimistic about the product launch.

“We need to reduce the generation gap by building communication and focus on similar problems we face daily, namely propaganda, information overload and data security,” says Postolati.

In the future, this format can become a regular learning activity carried out by partners in Moldova and Ukraine regardless of the pandemic limitations, ensuring that people — young and old — continue to learn essential media and information literacy skills.

The FaMILy Quiz has two rounds. The first will be played in Moldova and Ukraine separately and the best three teams of both countries will meet in the master round. Both quiz rounds will take place during this year’s MIL Week at the end of October.
