Faces of Media and Information Literacy

DW Akademie and its partners are working around the world to improve media and information literacy. Get to know some of the passionate people behind the projects.

  • Cambodia’s young population mainly uses social media to participate in public debate. But most young people lack media and information literacy. They have little awareness of digital security issues, hardly know how to detect filter bubbles and disinformation, and aren’t familiar with the rules of public dialogue on the Internet.   • Media shape not only perception, but also social relations, even cultural identity. Therefore, MIL is particularly important for Georgia and the South Caucasus region. In a country constantly exposed to Russian propaganda, citizens need to be media literate as protection against propaganda and manipulation.   • I used to think that media monopolies like in Guatemala could only be overturned by law. Today I know this is possible in a more elegant way: by people who know how to get better information elsewhere. The term ‘literacy’ in MIL is the perfect word for the concept: Those who are literate, who can read and write, are recognized as citizens. That’s what we work for in Guatemala.   • Media education was first included in Moldova's primary school’s curricula in 2017, and as an elective course in secondary schools in 2018. By now, about 30 schools teach it and we hope for more. While we see MIL improving according to surveys, those who state knowing what manipulation and propaganda are tend to be highly educated urban youths with access to various sources of information.
