Radio Panama talk show from the 2012 Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum
"Technically it was a challenge," says Hernán G. Posada, the Director of Radio Panama, reflecting on the airing of his radio talk show from a DW studio during this year's Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany. The conference took place from 25-27 June and focused on education and the media.
Every Sunday for the past 25 years, Posada has hosted a three-hour program devoted to socially relevant current affairs in his country. "Listeners can call in and ask questions - and they do so with fervor." Broadcasting from Germany was a first for the seasoned journalist. "We featured guests from DW's offices in Bonn and Berlin and there were many calls." Many listeners wanted to learn about the education system in Germany, but they also wanted to discuss the role of media.
"Once again I explained the principle behind our station," says Posada. "For us the listener is the centerpiece. We want to be relevant for our audience." Posada illustrated his point with an example pertaining to the conference theme. "The situation of our children is important for many people. While talking, we try to find solutions." He says the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum was an important opportunity to discuss problems that strike close to home. "Everything affects you," says Posada. "The media has the power, but we have to use it the right way. We have to entertain to inform – to do good things and to try everything to give answers." Posada follows that line very persuasively and with great drive. He says he took many new impressions home.
