Now, many of the Internet's biggest names, like Facebook and Amazon, began, some years ago as startups. But how can you know which will be successful and which won't be? Last week, Berlin hosted the NEXT conference, which brought together media, internet, advertising and technology professionals from around the world.

At the conference, there was a competition for young start-ups who could win coaching prizes for their new business ideas.

The range of start-ups was really diverse from targeted marketing tools to a first-aid application and even a virtual memorial site for the deceased.

Out of 60 entries, 12 made it to the final and were given the opportunity to present their concept live on stage in front of a judging panel and audience.
