EU greenlights Bayer-Monsanto deal – EU targets US tech giants
The US leader said he could tax one of France's key exports over a new digital tax on internet giants Google and Amazon. "I've always said American wine is better than French wine," said Trump, who doesn't drink alcohol.
Technology giants such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple are now the subject of a US federal antitrust investigation. The Justice Department is looking into whether large tech companies have harmed their users.
The investigation is probing whether the e-commerce giant is using merchant data to gain a competitive advantage. The move came hours after Germany said it was dropping a seven-month antitrust probe into Amazon.
At a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Brussels, member states failed to agree a plan on the taxing of digital giants like Google and Facebook. They will try again in 2020.
