German Chancellor Angela Merkel has hosted African leaders for the third G20 Compact with Africa summit in Berlin. The initiative aims to boost private investment in Africa — but challenges remain.
Twelve African heads of state are meeting with Chancellor Merkel in Berlin to take stock of the G20 "Compact with Africa" initiative. Merkel said the project puts African countries and the West on an "equal footing."
More than 20 foreign ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean have converged on Berlin, albeit without Venezuelan representation. Germany is trying to revitalize lagging diplomatic and trade ties with the region.
The German chancellor welcomed 11 African leaders to Berlin to introduce them to the CEOs of Germany's biggest firms. Outside, protesters demanded Germany stop doing business with dictatorships across the continent.
