Gündogan injured

Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has suffered a serious knee injury in training and will miss Germany's Euro 2016 campaign in France. The 25-year-old hasn't played since Dortmund's 3-0 win over Hamburg last month.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan will miss the rest of the season and the 2016 Euros in France after dislocating his knee in training.

It's a blow for the yellow-and-blacks, who are aiming to end the season on a bright note against Bayern Munich on May 21 in the German Cup final. Gündogan won't recover in time to be included in Joachim Löw's final squad for the European Championship, either.

"This is obviously a massive setback for us and for Ilkay himself," said Löw on the German FA's official website. "After already missing Brazil due to injury, he is now going to miss the Euros, which he had done so much for. He was in very good shape."

The German international had to sit out the World Cup in 2014, as did Dortmund teammate Marco Reus, who was injured in one of the final warm up games. Gündogan has bounced back from multiple injuries, including a long-term back problem that cost him more than a year of action.

Gündogan's contract is set to expire at the end of next season. According to recent reports, the midfielder has his heart set on a move to the English Premier League. His injury could now put a possible transfer to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in doubt.

The midfielder's representatives were spotted in Amsterdam in March meeting with Manchester City's Director of Football Txiki Begiristan. A deal worth 30 million euros ($34 million) was believed to be in the pipeline.
