Deniz Yücel is free: What game is Turkey playing?

Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yücel has been released from a prison in Turkey. Why now? What game is President Erdogan playing? Guests: Bülent Mumay (freelance Journalist), Michael Thumann (Zeit), Ulrike Herrmann (taz).

Our Guests:

Bülent Mumay is a freelance journalist from Istanbul. He says: “Freedom for Deniz Yücel doesn’t symbolize a serious change in Turkey. Unfortunately there is no place for hope yet”

Michael Thumann works for the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, he has lived several years in Istanbul and says: "Turkey hopes for transactional deals, but values stand in the way for closer relations to Germany."

Ulrike Hermann, author and journalist with the Berlin-based daily, the Tageszeitung, or TAZ, where Deniz Yücel us worked for many years. And Ulrike argues that: “Erdogan wants to make sure he’s not fighting on too many fronts. He needs Germany, because in Syria he’s provoking the Americans.”
