Corsican nationalists are putting pressure on French President Emmanuel Macron. They hoped he would grant the island more autonomy and thereby boost the economy. Youth unemployment here runs at around 20 percent. But Macron is dragging his feet.
While Angela Merkel met only with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, France's president also met his election rival. Merkel came under criticism for not meeting with the novice politician, who is tipped to win.
Emmanuel Macron offered to add a special mention of Corsica in the French constitution. But the nationalists, demanding more autonomy, termed his trip to the Mediterranean island a "missed opportunity."
The French and Dutch finance ministers have met amid tensions over the Netherlands' move to increase its stake in the airline. The share purchase had sparked concerns of a tug of war between the two governments.
