Legally banned but tolerated

February 24, 2014

It's legally banned but tolerated; the UN estimates that worldwide 35,000 underage girls are given in marriage every day - among them, many in Bangladesh. The courageous Wedding Busters are defending themselves against the premature end of their childhood.

They're a group of Bangladeshi teenagers who have themselves resisted early marriage. Together they go from door to door, warning families of the consequences of child marriage and explaining the legal situation - because in Bangladesh, as elsewhere, the legal minimum age for contracting a marriage is 18.
