Bundesliga matchday 9 in pictures
Bayern Munich stay top, closely followed by RB Leipzig who remain unbeaten. Suspended Roger Schmidt watches from the stands as his Leverkusen side come from behind to beat Wolfsburg. The Revierderby ends goalless.
Modeste hattrick sends Cologne fourth
Bundesliga top-scorer Anthony Modeste scored his ninth, tenth and eleventh goals of the season as Cologne blew away ten-man Hamburg 3-0 in a rampant second half. The struggling Northeners were reduced to ten men after American striker Bobby Wood saw red for an off-the-ball elbow on Dominique Heintz. Still without a win, Hamburg are bottom of the table whilst Cologne fans are dreaming of Europe.
Comfortable derby win for Bayern
Robert Lewandowski ended his goal drought with a brace against Augsburg as Bayern Munich beat their Bavarian neighbours 3-1 for the second time in a week. Arjen Robben provided both assists and added one more goal, proving he has still has much to offer ahead of contract extension talks.
Leipzig keep up the pressure on Bayern
They won't admit it themselves but RB Leipzig are slowly looking like Bayern Munich's closest challengers after beating Darmstadt 2-0. The controversial newcomers recorded their sixth win of the season, substitute Marcel Sabitzer with both goals as Ralph Hasenhüttl demonstrated the depth of quality in his squad.
Hoffenheim leapfrog Hertha into third
It took them 25 minutes to get going but TSG Hoffenheim could ultimately have beaten Hertha BSC by much more than just Niklas Süle's first half header. The 21-year-old gave the hosts lead with a powerful header from Kerem Demirbay's free-kick but the Berliners had goalkeeper Rune Jarstein to thank for keeping the scoreline down in the second half.
Revierderby ends goalless in Dortmund
Schalke 04 extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the home of arch rivals Borussia Dortmund in the 171st Revierderby. The hosts failed to register a single shot on goal in a poor first half but took control of the game after the interval, Ousmane Dembele hitting the bar whilst a quietly impressive Mario Götze also came close.
Freiburg celebrate first away win
Following four straight home wins punctuated by four straight away defeats, newly-promoted Freiburg finally overcame their travel sickness to record a first away win of the season away at Werder Bremen, thanks to goals from Maximillian Philipp, Vincenzo Grifo and Amir Abrashi. A second defeat under new manager Alexander Nouri leaves the Northerners just one point above the relegation zone.
Back to reality for Ingolstadt
Following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Borussia Dortmund on matchday 8, it seemed that Ingolstadt's first win of the season couldn't be far away. But a penalty from Yunus Malli and a late strike from Levin Öztunali condemned the "Schanzers" to a 2-0 defeat in Mainz.
Suspended Schmidt sees Leverkusen comeback
Serving the second game of his suspension after his altercation with Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann, Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt watched from the stands as his Bayer Leverkusen team overturned a goal deficit in Wolfsburg to win for the first time since beating Borussia Dortmund at the start of October. Managerless Wolfsburg have not won in the Bundesliga since matchday 1.
Still no victory for Gladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 0-0 in a forgettable Friday night encounter on matchday 9. André Schubert's Foals havn't won in the league since September, although Frankfurt will be happy with a point on the road.
Bundesliga on Sunday
Having beaten Cologne last week, Hertha BSC again face top four opposition in the form of high-flying Hoffenheim. Cologne look to return to winning ways at home to struggling Hamburg.
