Botswana has the largest elephant population in Africa. Last year, the ban on elephant hunting that had been in place in the country for five years was lifted. Elephants are encroaching on residential areas and doing damage to local farms.
Botswana is mulling lifting a ban on big game hunting following recommendations from a government committee. The committee said lifting the ban on hunting animals, such as elephants, would "promote conservationism."
Niassa Reserve, one of the biggest wildlife parks in Africa, marked a year without losing a single elephant to the poachers. Up to 4,000 of the animals roam the Mozambique park, which covers more land than Switzerland.
